MILAN, Italy - Whether in leopard prints or safari wear, the Max Mara woman is the hunter not the hunted.

The Max Mara collection presented during Milan Fashion Week on Thursday evokes the jungle, where foliage prints provide natural camouflage for the animalistic spirit ready to spring - a mood captured in curve-hugging dresses in stripes of spotted and floral prints.

The silhouette is both free, with loose blouses of light fabric, and controlled, with fitted skirts that often finish below the knee. Safari touches are present throughout, including large pockets, rolled-up sleeves and button tabs on shoulders.

Blouson tops have large, lightweight hoods, for taking quick cover to scurry away, unrecognized.

In keeping with the theme, the collection's palette is rooted in earthy tones like camel and olive green, complemented by leopard, floral and sometimes plaid prints as well as icier tones of blue and green.

Accessories include ample leather bags with crocodile or fur accents and oversized tortoiseshell sunglasses. The look is finished with open-toed. thick-heeled clogs that are tied at the ankle. Hair is swept off the face and neck with headscarves, loose strands giving a hurried appearance.

Paris' Louvre Museum unveils Islamic Art wing, decade in the making, as cultural tensions roil

PARIS - The Louvre Museum is unveiling a new wing and galleries dedicated to the arts of Islam, culminating a nearly €100 million ($130 million), decade-long project coming to fruition amid tensions between the Muslim world and the West.

The new dragonfly-shaped building marks the famed Paris museum's greatest development since its iconic glass pyramid constructed 20 years ago. The Department of Islamic Art will exhibit much of the Louvre's 18,000 works, hoping also to foster cultural understanding.

Mosaics from the Damascus mosque and a 15th-century Mamluk porch are among works spanning from 632 to 1800 A.D. Donors included Morocco's King Mohammed VI and Saudi Prince Waleed Bin Talal's foundation.

Louvre director Henri Loyrette says the galleries aim to showcase "the radiant face of a civilization."

The wing, with its mission of heightening cross-cultural understanding, is opening at a tense — and perhaps opportune — time.

France stepped up security Wednesday at its embassies across the Muslim world after a French satirical weekly published lewd caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Charlie Hebdo, whose offices were firebombed last year, was brandishing its right to free speech. But the publication raised concerns that France could face violent protests like the ones targeting the United States over an amateur video produced in California ridiculing the prophet that have left at least 30 people dead.

French officials said the weekly was throwing "oil on the fire" and urged calm. France has western Europe's largest Muslim population.

In a sign of the political importance of the new Louvre exhibit, French President Francois Hollande attended an opening ceremony Tuesday, calling it a "political gesture in the service of respect for peace." The Saudi prince and the president of Azerbaijan, accompanied him.

Hollande criticized those who "destroy the values of Islam by resorting to violence and hate."

"The best weapons for fighting fanaticism that claims to be coming from Islam are found in Islam itself," he said. "What more beautiful message than that demonstrated here by these works."

The Louvre opened a department of Islamic art in 2003, under former President Jacques Chirac, who said he wanted to highlight the contributions of Muslim civilizations on Western culture. Chirac, who vigorously opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, constantly pushed for the idea of a "dialogue of cultures" to break down the misunderstandings between the West and the Muslim world.

But its gallery could initially display only a fraction of the thousands of pieces of art from the Muslim world, so it decided under Chirac on an ambitious expansion.

The museum opens to the public Saturday.

While North American sports gamers eagerly anticipate the new version of Madden, it appears the world waits for the latest FIFA video game.

Some 1.99 million people in 73 countries downloaded the demo for the made-in-Canada "FIFA Soccer 13" in the first three days of its release.

The game isn't out until Sept. 25 in North America and Sept. 28 worldwide but it's already hard to miss. Advertising hoardings promoting the new version were visible at English Premier League games on the weekend.

For Aaron McHardy, a game play producer of the EA Sports' title, the attention is quite remarkable.

"It's quite a cool thing," said the Vancouver native who has been working on the title since FIFA 08. "At home everyone knows FIFA, you tell people you're the game play designer for FIFA, you still get a smile.

"But it's quite breathtaking when you go to somewhere like London around (this) week or the week after and you start to see the signs and the lineups of people overnight waiting to get the game, it really is cool to see what an impact the game has worldwide. ... Everywhere you go, somebody knows what FIFA (the game) is."

The demo features five teams — AC Milan, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Manchester City — as well as Man City's Etihad Stadium.

And for those who haven't tried it yet, be warned that Manchester City's Argentine striker Carlos Tevez is a terror.

"I've heard people are finding him quite good this year," McHardy, an Arsenal fan, said with a laugh.

After rehauling the physics of the game last year, improving areas like tactical defending, the designers at EA Canada in Burnaby, B.C., saw the opportunity to build on those changes in "FIFA 13."

McHardy said the goals this time were to create "the unpredictability and the drama of real-world football" and to have "battles for possession and giving people creativity and freedom."

That turned into so-called features as first-touch control, attacking intelligence, and complete dribbling.

There's also more creativity surrounding free kicks, both on offence and defence.

The player impact engine was revamped last year, adding in real-word physical movement to improve the look of fumbles and falls. This year, more features have been added with more life-like defending in terms of pushing and pulling an opponent to battle for possession.

You can reach out with your arm to harass an attacker. But be too aggressive and the referee will penalize or yellow-card you.

On attack, players work harder to get open, making curving runs to stay onside or elude defenders.

It's all about polishing the product, with gamer feedback playing its part. Defences in "FIFA 11" were hard to break down, developers found, for example. Hence the need to expand the attack, to offer more ways to try to exploit the defence.

"Last year was laying that foundation," McHardy said. "This year, we're totally taking advantage of all those things we did last year by building features and behaviours on top of that."

In career mode this year, you can advance to the international arena — another request from gamers.

"FIFA Soccer 13" also offers the online service "Match Day" that provides regular updates to player form. And in-game commentary will reflect real-world events, thanks to previously prepared clips that can pulled out and used at the correct time to "accentuate what's actually happening in the real world."

FIFA Soccer 13 will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo 3DS, PC, PSP and later this year on the Nintendo Wii U.

LOS ANGELES - Three weeks ago, Clint Eastwood shared the spotlight with a single chair.

On Wednesday night, he shared it with 16.

The 82-year-old Oscar winner walked the press gauntlet at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film "Trouble With the Curve" - with the empty chairs right behind him.

They were simply set dressing: bleacher seats lined up along the green carpet at the premiere for "Trouble With the Curve," a family drama about a fading baseball-scout father played by Eastwood and his estranged daughter, played by Amy Adams.

When it was pointed out to him the Oscar winner laughed.

On Aug. 30, Eastwood stood on stage at the Republican National Convention berating an empty chair, representing President Barack Obama.

Dolan says 'transsexuality is a metaphor' in new film 'Laurence Anyways'

Written By empapat on Rabu, 19 September 2012 | 13.46

TORONTO - In Montreal phenom filmmaker Xavier Dolan's new feature, "Laurence Anyways," a handsome teacher bravely reveals to his girlfriend of two years that he wants to be a woman.

While the ensuing drama details the struggles of transsexuality, Dolan notes the French-language film represents all couples who struggle with changing identities in relationships.

"Transsexuality is a metaphor for authenticity in a couple," the 23-year-old writer-director said at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, where "Laurence Anyways" won the best Canadian feature prize.

"From that moment which succeeds the honeymooning, the teenage years of love ... where you have to come off as who you really are and expect from the person facing you that she will respect you for that person and that you will respect her for who she is.

"That's a make or break for a lot of couples."

Opening Friday in Toronto, "Laurence Anyways" stars Melvil Poupaud as the eponymous protagonist, who surprises beau Fred (Suzanne Clement) with news that he feels like he was born to be a woman.

Fred is supportive and encourages Laurence to begin wearing women's clothing, both in his personal life and on the job, which upsets the local parents' group and ministry of education in Montreal.

As Laurence's life takes a dramatic turn, so too does his relationship with Fred, and the film follows their decade-long journey to connect through his transition in the 1990s.

Co-stars include Monia Chokri, who was also in Dolan's 2010 romantic comedy "Heartbeats" ("Les amours imaginaires"), which won the Regards Jeunes Prize at the Cannes film festival. It was his second feature after the 2009 personal parent-son drama "I Killed My Mother" ("J'ai tué ma mère"), which won three awards at Cannes.

"What I mostly see that connects these films is that they're all about impossible love," Dolan said in an interview in a Toronto hotel room, wearing his signature horn-rimmed glasses, his curly pompadour more tame than usual.

"Impossible love between a teenager and his mom, impossible love between two friends and that ... beautiful stranger that shows up, and then impossible love between two crazy lovers in the '80s or '90s that have great expectations for their lives that are compromised by honesty and request of authenticity from the man in the couple."

Dolan conceived the film idea while shooting "I Killed My Mother," when a wardrobe assistant revealed that her ex-boyfriend told her he wanted to become a woman.

Clement, who was also in "I Killed My Mother," discussed the story with him for several years and had some say in how far her character would go in the relationship.

"The fact that he's able to write about this at his age is amazing," she said.

"He ... goes beyond the fear of, 'What are people going to say — that I don't know enough?' ... He digs deeper in his own relationships ... asks questions. He's really open to observing and he's intelligent, I think."

Dolan also has a "boldness" onset and will change scenes and dialogue on the fly, added Clement, whose other credits include Robert Lepage's "Le Confessional" and Philippe Falardeau's "It's Not Me, I Swear."

In fact, a week after shooting the movie, he realized the pivotal scene where Laurence tells Fred that he wants to be a woman was "too boring."

Dolan had to fly Poupaud back to Quebec from his home in Paris to reshoot, but that's not unusual for him.

"I've always reshot, always. It's not very economic but sometimes you have to," Dolan said with a laugh.

Like "Heartbeats," "Laurence Anyways" is filled with rousing stylistic touches, from artfully framed shots to pops of colour and a charged soundtrack.

Clement noted Dolan is going through a "creative explosion" in his life and in his work, and it's always evolving.

"That's, I think, the main reason why I wanted to do the movie, is to do it with him, with this type of openness, that everything can always move. It's something that has become almost I think vital in my life."

Though many reviewers comment on the artistic touches in his films, Dolan said he's not sure he's found his filmmaking style.

"I've found stories to tell and I've tried to give these stories the best direction that they deserved, and I don't know how I've (succeeded) to do that but I never thought I would find myself or find a signature.

"Perhaps I can help it; there are things that I like, obviously. But these three movies are highly different from one another, very different."

Dolan also notes that he's "really into acting and dialogue and dramatic tension," not just style.

"But I don't really care about people's perception of my work," continued Dolan. "I read everything they write and everything they say and that's very important to me, it's educational, actually, so that's fun to read.

"But in the end I want to be content with what I do, not with what people think I do."

"Laurence Anyways" is set to open in Ottawa on Oct. 12.

Lindsay Lohan charged with leaving scene of NYC car accident; rep expects her to be cleared

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Lindsay Lohan was arrested in New York early Wednesday on charges that she clipped a pedestrian with her car and did not stop driving, but her publicist said he expects the allegations to be proven false.

The 26-year-old actress was arrested at 2:25 a.m. as she left a nightclub at the Dream Hotel in Manhattan's Chelsea neighbourhood, police said. They said no alcohol was involved.

Lohan was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and causing injury. She was given a ticket and scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 23.

Police said Lohan was slowly driving a black Porsche through an alley between the Dream Hotel and the Maritime Hotel on 16th Street when the accident occurred. The victim called 911. He was treated at a hospital for a knee injury and released.

"We are confident this matter will be cleared up in the coming weeks and the claims being made against Lindsay will be proven untrue," Lohan's publicist Steve Honig wrote in an email. He wrote the incident appeared to be "much ado about nothing."

It was the latest car accident involving Lohan.

On June 8, Lohan was involved in a crash in California that sent her and her assistant to a hospital. They were on their way to a shoot for the film "Liz and Dick" when Lohan's Porsche collided with a dump truck on the Pacific Coast Highway. Neither was seriously injured and Lohan resumed shooting later in the day.

The accident remains under investigation; police have said they are trying to determine who was driving.

The actress, best known for roles in "Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls," was cleared in May of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car. Los Angeles prosecutors refused to file charges, stating there was no evidence an accident occurred and citing doubts about the manager's credibility.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace last year from a jewelry store without permission. She completed a strict counselling and morgue cleanup duty program implemented by a judge. She is not required to check in with a judge or probation officer, but she could face a jail term if she is re-arrested.

Lohan recently filmed "The Canyons," a film by "Less Than Zero" author Bret Easton Ellis. "The Canyons" has Lohan playing opposite James Deen, who is best known as an adult film star with thousands of movies to his credit.

Valentino's new runway is the ballet stage

NEW YORK - When dancers of the New York City Ballet grace the stage at Lincoln Center for this year's fall gala Thursday night, they'll be wearing extraordinary costumes by Valentino - and not many people can say that these days.

Valentino - really Valentino Garavani, but his name stands on its own and usually in boldface - retired as one of fashion's most celebrated designers nearly four years ago, leaving the design house he founded in 1960. But, he says, retirement wasn't ever going to be spent enjoying the views from his half-dozen homes around the world.

His desire to put pencil to paper and sketch artful things never diminished, he says, but churning out collection after collection did.

"I stopped because in the 'fashion world,' I had done almost everything, and fashion was taking a direction I didn't like," Valentino, now 80, says. "... This is a new life for me, and it's been a very beautiful experience."

For the fall gala, he has created 16 original designs for a ballet set to selections from Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" and for pieces set to music by Duke Ellington, Fred Astaire, Max Richter and Dinah Washington.

There also will be a tribute of sorts to Valentino: The ballet will perform "Rubies," from George Balanchine's "Jewels," set to Igor Stravinsky's Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. A bold ruby hue is known as Valentino red, a colour the designer made his signature over the years.

Valentino says he's a great fan of the ballet, and he has found working with the lovely music and eager dancers to be inspiring. It also helped that costumers were available to make everything perfect, just like it should be for what is essentially haute couture, he adds with a smile.

"I am doing this with great pleasure." he says.

For all his grandeur and fame, Valentino appeared quite comfortable in a sparse ballet practice room scattered with a few instruments.

He says NYCB Ballet Master-in-Chief Peter Martins, who is a friend, seems a little surprised at the minute level of detail that's required, and at the number of changes that were happening just days before the show. It's the first time Martins has seen choreography done around a dress and not vice versa, Valentino says with a smile.

Valentino designed costumes for the Vienna Ballet in 2009, and he would like to do a large-scale, ornate production, perhaps for the Bolshoi Ballet in Russia.

He, along with partner Giancarlo Giammetti, spent most of the last two weeks at Manhattan's Lincoln Center, which is not only the home of the NYCB but also is the hub of New York Fashion Week, where twice a year designers preview their looks for the coming season. He attended the runway show of his friend Diane von Furstenberg, but doesn't miss "fashion."

"I have nothing to regret in my career, and I love my colleagues and peers, but I don't pay attention to 'fashion' anymore," Valentino says.

He adds: "I have no nostalgia."

For those who do miss his typically feminine, glamorous fashion looks, there are several opportunities to see his work.

Somerset House in London plans "Valentino: Master of Couture" as a major exhibit, with 130 gowns from the wardrobes of Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Gwyneth Paltrow. It will open at the end of November and run through March.

Last year marked the launch of the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum, a downloadable app with real-time, 3-D views of hundreds of his dresses and even more of his sketches, ads, photos and videos. Giammetti, the business-focused, big-picture half of the duo, headed up this project since Valentino is the first to say he's not an aficionado of high-tech gadgets.

"I am the worst thing for anything mechanical or on the computer. Last evening, something was wrong with the TV," he says. "I had to turn it off because I didn't know what else to do."

He's moved on, Valentino insists, not only to costumes, but also to his interests in decorating, architecture and restoration of buildings, as well as cooking. His French chateau is featured in the October issue of Architectural Digest, and he's been asked to write a cookbook, which he's considering. "It's not terribly far away from what I do," he says. "I love food, so maybe there will be a book of recipes."

And he's keeping other options open.

"People know I'm available, and if I think a project is sensational, then I'll do it."

World celebrates 10th annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Photo Credit: File , Getty Images

TORONTO - Arrrr! It's that time of year again, matey: International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of its debut.

According to the official website, the idea originated in 1995 during a game of racquetball between two friends. John Baur and Mark Summers, out to lose a bit of weight, began shouting words of encouragement at each other to help keep the momentum of the poorly-played game going.

From "Damn, you bastard!" and "Oh, jeez, my hamstring!", the two started shouting words of encouragement in pirate slang, using terms such as "cannonade" and "yardarm".

After realizing how enjoyable it was to speak in pirate, the two decided the world needed a Talk Like A Pirate Day. The date was set: September 19th, which also happens to be Summers' ex-wife's birthday.

The two men celebrated the day on their own for seven years. In 2002, they pitched the idea to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dave Barry, who later became the official spokesperson for International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

The official website features everything from a English-to-pirate translator and slang terminology to pickup lines and pirate talk for kids.

'Satanic Verses' author Rushdie dismisses new death threat from religious foundation in Iran

FILE - This Sept. 8, 2012 file photo shows author Salman Rushdie posing for a photo as he promotes the movie "Midnight's Children" during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto. Rushdie is dismissing the latest threat against his life as just talk. "This was essentially one priest in Iran looking for a headline," the author of "The Satanic Verses" said Tuesday, Sept. 18, as he spoke at a Barnes & Noble in New York. Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 declared Rushdie's novel was blasphemous and called for his death. A semi-official Iranian religious foundation headed by Ayatollah Hassan Saneii has raised the bounty for Rushdie from $2.8 million to $3.3 million after recent protests against an anti-Islamic film that helped lead to riots around the Middle East. (AP Photo/The Canadian Presss, Chris Young, file)

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Salman Rushdie is dismissing the latest threat against his life as just talk.

"This was essentially one priest in Iran looking for a headline," the author of "The Satanic Verses" said Tuesday night as he spoke at a Barnes & Noble in Union Square before about 400 people, some just children when Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 declared Rushdie's novel was blasphemous and called for his death.

Iran's government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini's decree, his fatwa, but anti-Rushdie sentiment remains. A semi-official Iranian religious foundation headed by Ayatollah Hassan Saneii has raised the bounty for Rushdie from $2.8 million to $3.3 million after recent protests against an anti-Islamic film that helped lead to riots around the Middle East. But Rushdie, who called the movie "the worst video on YouTube," says Saneii has long offered a bounty and few people have taken him seriously.

Rushdie said the threat was simply the latest product of the "outrage industry" and added that there is "no evidence" of people being interested in the bounty. His concern had been state-sanctioned death squads, "professional killers." But the days of hiding are long over and he is free to walk the streets, stand on line in supermarkets and honour that old publishing ritual — the author reading.

Rushdie was discussing his memoir about the fatwa, "Joseph Anton," which has just been published to strong reviews and encouraging sales. Security officials were present Tuesday at Barnes & Noble, but precautions were modest enough that Rushdie's appearance was well publicized and you could enter the reading area on the fourth floor without having your bag checked. The greatest deterrent was the weather, whistling winds and pounding rain that at times pressed against the windows just behind Rushdie.

Wearing a grey suit and no tie, the 65-year-old author sounded relieved, gratified and at home. This was a story with a happy ending, he said, although one that he would prefer to relive only on paper. "Joseph Anton" follows the abrupt turns in his life and career, from his swift rise in the early 1980s as the celebrated author of "Midnight's Children" to his sudden notoriety as objections to "The Satanic Verses" intensified from protests to government sanctions. The book is named for the pseudonym Rushdie used while in hiding. Anton was for Anton Chekhov, the "poet of loneliness," and "Joseph" for Joseph Conrad, who penned a motto Rushdie tried to follow: "I must live till I die."

Rushdie made it, but he remembered those who nearly didn't, including the novel's Norwegian publisher, shot three times in the back. That publisher not only pulled through, Rushdie observed, he made sure to order more copies of the book. Rushdie also thanked such loyal friends as Christopher Hitchens and the many booksellers in the U.S. who continued to stock the novel despite bomb threats and real bombs. "This was a shooting war," he said.

As he writes in "Joseph Anton," Rushdie witnessed the very best and worst in people. He remembered being criticized by conservatives and even some liberals for causing his own trouble. Two marriages ended during his decade underground and publishers were reluctant to release the paperback of "Satanic Verses," which became a bestseller for reasons Rushdie never imagined or desired.

"Avoid being condemned to death by the leader of a tyrannical country," he advised the audience Tuesday.

The fatwa turned his life into a novel, a genre novel. Rushdie spoke of having armed policemen in his kitchen, people "licensed to kill." He described streets in Paris cleared by security officials so a car he was in could drive through. And he remembered looking out on a cafe and wishing he could join the drinkers and smokers trying to figure out who was causing the fuss.

He says he's proud of the book and of his fight for a most precious freedom — freedom of expression. Terrorism is really the art of fear, he explained. "The only way you can defeat it is by deciding not to be afraid."

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Lindsay Lohan was arrested in New York early Wednesday on charges that she clipped a pedestrian with her car and did not stop driving, police said.

Her publicist, Steve Honig, declined to comment. Her attorneys did not immediately respond to voicemails and emails from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Police said Lohan was slowly driving a black Porsche through an alley between the Dream Hotel and the Maritime Hotel on 16th Street when the accident occurred. The victim called 911. He was treated at a hospital for a knee injury and released.

LONDON - It looks like for some designers, next spring is fashion's moment to shine — literally.

Metallic leather, shiny satin and foil-like fabrics in rainbow colours dazzled on the catwalk at Burberry Prorsum Monday, reinforcing a trend that already saw lashings of sequins and space-age style designs earlier in London Fashion Week.

Burberry, which typically puts on the most extravagant and celebrity-studded display during the week-long style extravaganza, went for flamboyant luxury for its latest spring collection. The catwalk was packed with iridescent swimsuits, metallic leather trench coats and satin corsets, and the palette was that of precious metals and gemstones: Gold, silver, emerald, turquoise and ruby.

"I wanted to do a collection that makes people smile," creative director Christopher Bailey said after the show. "I want it to be joyous, a bit sassier and sexier."

The show's front row guests included boy band One Direction's Harry Styles, burlesque actress Dita von Teese, "Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel and tennis player Andy Murray.

Bailey opened with a structured white silk cape draped over a rose gold bodysuit with fine ruching.

Coats — especially Burberry's signature trench coats — featured prominently, but there was also a notable move toward capes and a puffy, button-less cocoon jacket shape.

Standout variations on the cape included one in silver leather, draped over an emerald shift dress, and another in clear orange plastic trimmed with python leather.

The repeated pairings of capes with corsets was inspired by early 1900s photos from the Burberry archive, Bailey said.

Meanwhile, trench coats were reimagined in a luxurious gold lace, a hot pink-to-red ombre, and in the finale, a rainbow of metallic textured leather in shiny fuchsia, purple, cobalt and bronze.

That same shiny colored leather was seen on the bags, too, paired with matching shades of clear plastic.

Burberry's Bailey wasn't the only one bit by the shiny, metallic bug. Holographic material and full-on sequined party dresses appeared at Jonathan Saunders, Topshop Unique had silver paired with white organza, and Preen's show featured metallic lace.

Scottish heritage brand Pringle also featured plastic details, though it was only a nod. The brand, best known for its fine argyle knits, updated frumpy '50s crew neck twinsets with vibrant colours like jade and canary yellow, and embellished them with geometric plastic beading.

Pringle, which presented its collection in a hotel room instead of on a catwalk, also featured a host of pretty sorbet shades, the other trend for next season. Knits and jackets were made in soothing hues of dove grey, lilac, pale lemon and powder pink.

Also showing on Day Four were Christopher Kane, Erdem and Peter Pilotto. The action will be winding down on Tuesday, the last day of womens' wear previews at the fashion week.

Beckham told The Associated Press last month that he's pleased with consumer reaction to the line and its ad campaign.

"I'm very happy that so far people seem to like it and the first season was incredibly successful. The challenge is to keep it going and establish a brand that will last many years. That is my ambition,'' he wrote in an email.

Small-town Russian deacon defends Pussy Riot members

TAMBOV, Russia - Sergei Baranov keeps his clerical robes hanging neatly in his closet, but he believes he will never again be allowed to wear them inside a Russian Orthodox Church.

Baranov, who had led a quiet life as a deacon in the small city of Tambov, became an Internet celebrity last month when he asked to be defrocked in an open letter to the Moscow patriarchate, saying he was outraged by the church's stance against three members of the punk band Pussy Riot.

The feminist rockers were sentenced to two years in prison after singing a "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral, a stunt that divided Russians.

Even some of the devout who did not approve of the women's high kicks at the cathedral's pulpit in February spoke out against the trial and what appeared to be the church's heavy-handed involvement. Baranov gave them a strong a public voice - and gave up his calling to back up his beliefs.

Baranov told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he supports the band's stunt and does not regret his resignation.

"Everyone prays as they can," Baranov said of the Pussy Riot members. "And with their act they exposed the ills and blisters of society. We should have done that a long time ago."

Baranov was far away from the discontent still simmering in Moscow after the trial. But he managed to further ripple the waters with the help of Facebook, as his letter accumulated over 4,000 likes and almost 2,000 re-posts within several days.

The Internet has mobilized countless opposition voices like Baranov's throughout Russia, this time helping a small-town cleric draw attention to the ills of the Orthodox Church, its conservatism and its open support for Putin.

The Pussy Riot case demonstrated that the church is more attentive to the government than to the needs of its believers, and it was time for a change in the clergy hierarchy, he argued.

Anger with the church began to boil at the time of Putin's re-election to a third presidential term in March, when Patriarch Kirill strongly backed his bid, calling the 12-year Putin's rule a "miracle of God." Putin, who was facing massive street protests in Moscow against his rule, was eager to have a helping hand by the church in swaying more devout voters in his direction.

"When Hitler and Stalin created their powerful totalitarian regimes, they made use of powerful ideologies," said Father Gleb Yakunin, a former Russian Orthodox Church priest who was defrocked in the 1990s. "Putin seems to be a good administrator, but (he's) a weak ideologist, so he decided to use something that already exists."

After Baranov posted his open letter online, the Tambov regional clergy issued a press release on their website in which they accused him of "rakish behaviour" and alcohol abuse, saying that he was using the current political climate and the trial of Pussy Riot as an excuse to leave the church.

The former deacon was subsequently defrocked, although an official defrocking requires confirmation by the patriarch, who is likely to sign the mandate within a few weeks. Officials at Moscow Patriarchate wouldn't comment on Baranov's case.

According to Baranov, local politicians were also rattled by his letter, and he said he had been approached by a deputy governor and security officials, who asked him about the political motives behind his statements.

On a sunny Tuesday morning in Tambov, a city about 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of Moscow best known for its delicious potatoes, locals were far from providing support for the defrocked deacon. Several members of the Pokrovsky Cathedral, the church where Baranov served, said they believed that a priest should respect his religious order, and that respect for the church should come before freedom of speech.

"It wasn't correct for him to write in support (of the Pussy Riot girls)," said Larisa Krasnova, a retired military sergeant who had been visiting the church with her grandson. "I approve of the fact that they were tried, because it's blasphemy and because it's unforgivable."

Baranov said he didn't expect the support of local churchgoers. He was afraid, however, that the church was preparing to further purge him, ensuring that he would no longer be able to take part in the services that he fell in love with when he was thirteen years old.

"When the media furor dies down, they will simply excommunicate me from Church," Baranov said. "Once this happens, I won't have the right to enter a church, I will lose the right to communion."

The church has not yet requested Baranov's excommunication, although they have not denied that such action may take place in the future.

Excommunication is a quite rare punishment in the Orthodox Church. Most famously, novelist Leo Tolstoy was excommunicated, and other who are unrepentant, like Yakunin, have suffered a similar fate.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Edvard Munch's "The Scream," which sold for nearly $120 million at auction, will go on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The museum announced Tuesday that the iconic image will be on display from Oct. 24 to April 29.

The painting is the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. It was purchased by an anonymous private collector at Sotheby's in May.

Munch created four versions of "The Scream" between 1893 and 1910. This is the only one in private hands. The others are in Norwegian museums.

MoMA Director Glenn Lowry calls it "a rare opportunity" to see the artwork.

The image of a man holding his head and screaming under a streaked, blood-red sky has become a modern symbol of human anxiety.

Randy Newman, known for his satirical songs, releases free political tune 'I'm Dreaming'

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Randy Newman is weighing in on the presidential election, and he's playing the race card through a song he wrote called "I'm Dreaming."

The piano tune features the refrain: "I'm dreaming of a white president." It is full of satirical, sarcastic — and signature — Newman anecdotes about someone who votes for the president because he is white.

Newman, who is white, is openly supporting President Barack Obama. He says he wants the public to find comedic relief in the song, but to also know he's serious about his thoughts that racism is well and alive in the world — and in the current presidential race. He called racism "the great issue of this country."

"I felt that that sentiment exists in the country," Newman said in an interview Monday. "I don't know how many people you can get to admit it. I think maybe zero."

The song will be released as a free download and Newman is encouraging listeners to donate to the United Negro College Fund.

Newman, 68, has won multiple Academy Awards, Grammys and Emmys for composing music for movies such as "Cars," ''Monsters, Inc.," the "Toy Story" franchise and the TV series "Monk." He often writes songs from the perspective of a character not like himself. "Short People," the 1977 No. 2 Billboard hit, attacked short people. And "Sail Away" is a come on from a slave trader to a potential slave.

"I'm Dreaming" features lyrics like: "He won't be the brightest, perhaps, but he'll be the whitest, and I'll vote for that." He said as he wrote the song the lyrics "didn't come that easy."

"It's delicate enough that I'm not going to offend people every which way, but I wanted to get it right as best I could," said Newman, who added that he's always worried there may be some backlash following the release of a song like this one.

Newman believes Obama will be re-elected in November and feels that Republican contender Mitt Romney isn't a "serious candidate for president."

Newman said he's proud of how America has progressed, though, but adds that "there's a long way to go."

"No European country would have elected a black man," he said. "I can't believe it happened. I think it's fantastic, like a step on the moon."

The Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee said some friends told him to save the track — which he wrote a couple weeks ago — for an upcoming album, but he says releasing it now is perfect timing.

"I think it's for the moment," he said. "It's not going to live forever."

LONDON - Luxury label Burberry Prorsum has dazzled its catwalk audience with a show packed with rich metallic leathers and shiny foil fabrics.

Models wore a series of iridescent body suits, plastic capes, satin corsets and feather dresses, and in the finale marched out in a rainbow of metallic trench coats.

Creative director Christopher Bailey said Monday he wanted the new collection to be "a little bit sassy, sexier and more playful."

The luxurious colours and flamboyant designs contrast with the company's financial situation. Last week, Burberry shares slumped after it surprised markets with a profit warning. The report also sent stock prices for a host of other luxury retailers sharply down.

Asked about the sales slowdown, Bailey said: "You have to be optimistic and think long-term."

Colbert, 'Modern Family' cast named guest hosts on 'GMA'

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Stephen Colbert and the cast of "Modern Family" are next up as "Good Morning America" guest hosts for Robin Roberts, who is scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant this week.

The surging ABC morning show hasn't missed a beat since Roberts exited on Aug. 30. The co-host has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease, and is out indefinitely for treatment that includes a transplant of marrow donated by her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts. Robin Roberts had to undergo chemotherapy before the procedure, said Tom Cibrowski, the show's senior executive producer.

Cibrowski offered more details about the schedule of substitutes for Roberts, which is expected to include Oprah Winfrey and newswomen Barbara Walters, Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer sometime next month.

Celebrities will be deployed in much the same way as Jessica Simpson was one day last week, appearing on the pop culture-heavy second hour alongside show regulars George Stephanopoulos, Josh Elliott, Lara Spencer and Amy Robach.

"It shows them in a different light for a little bit and you get to see them do something different," Cibrowski said. "It might be a little funny if they have to read the prompter and there's some slip-up. It's all spontaneous."

The show will feature a different cast member of "Modern Family" each day for a week as the new television season begins. Actor Rob Lowe is also scheduled, Cibrowski said.

While the idea of celebrity guest hosts has been tried before in morning television, ABC's rivals at the "Today" most recently showed its potency when Sarah Palin guested and got strong ratings one day last spring.

With their experience in news, Walters, Sawyers and Couric will work for the full two hours when they come on "Good Morning America" for a day. Each has had extensive morning experience: Walters and Couric on "Today" and Sawyers on "GMA" and a CBS morning show.

"Good Morning America" has consolidated its gains in stunningly fast fashion in a morning television world where loyalties are hard to change. "GMA" beat the "Today" show in the weekly ratings for the first time in 17 years this spring. Except for the weeks that "Today" was in London with the Summer Olympics, "GMA" has won most of this summer. Viewers have punished "Today" for the awkward replacement of Ann Curry by Savannah Guthrie early in the summer.

During the weeks starting Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, the ABC show won by more than 800,000 viewers.

Even Cibrowski admitted to some surprise at how quickly the fortunes have changed and how loyal viewers have remained through Roberts' absences.

"It heartens us," he said. "It really heartens us to know that the viewers are still with us because they enjoy 'GMA' and 'GMA' is so strong right now."

Simpson was brought in as the first celebrity host on Sept. 11, a decision that had the potential for looking tone deaf on the solemn anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Yet it was "Today" that got in trouble that day, airing an interview with Kris Jenner talking about her breast implants while its rivals paused for a moment of silence to honour attack victims. NBC News President Steve Capus reportedly apologized to affiliates for putting them in a difficult position.

Cibrowski said there would be no guest hosts just before Election Day with a concentration on the campaign.

A report by the conservative watchdog Media Research Center illustrated a sharp difference in how the morning news shows covered the Republican and Democratic conventions. During the two weeks when the convention was held, "CBS This Morning" aired 250 minutes of political coverage and the "Today" show had 152 minutes. "Good Morning America," which emphasizes lighter fare, spent under 70 minutes on politics during those weeks, the MRC said.

Cibrowski, noting that "GMA" aired a Stephanopoulos interview with Mitt Romney last week, said ABC is resisting segments with political surrogates arguing when they can be seen so frequently on cable news networks.

"We're not going to get into the game of minute to minute in political coverage," he said. "We want to make sure we have the best political coverage."

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Gap Inc. has tapped Rebekka Bay as creative director and executive vice-president for global design, effective Oct. 1.

Bay, who developed and launched the COS brand at the Swedish fast-fashion retail chain H&M, will be responsible for products sold online and in the nearly 1,600 stores in 42 countries in which Gap's namesake brand operates, according to a statement issued Monday.

She fills the spot vacated by Patrick Robinson who was ousted in May 2011. He had been design director for the Gap chain.

Bay will report to Gap North America president Art Peck and Gap International President Stephen Sunnucks. "We've taken the time to identify the right creative leader for Gap and we've found that in Rebekka," said Sunnucks in a statement. "We're confident that Rebekka's approach to design, along with her considerable international experience, will allow her to help us build upon the momentum we're delivering in the business today."

Gap Inc. also operates stores under Old Navy, Banana Republic as well as under Piperlime.

Bay conceptualized, developed and launched the COS brand for Hennes & Mauritz —H&M— starting in 2006. The COS brand is now successful across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Since 2011, Bay served as creative director at Bruuns Bazaar, overseeing the designer of women's and men's apparel.

Bay is signing up with Gap at a time when the clothing chain is showing evidence of a turnaround. It reported in mid-August a 29 per cent increase in second-quarter net income, as the fashion retailer's moves to liven up its clothing with brightly colored trendy looks are winning over shoppers.

Gap also raised its full-year profit guidance for the second time since May.

At her new job at Gap, Bay will be based in New York, managing design teams there and at the 1969 Gap jeans brand office in Los Angeles and will work closely with Pam Wallack, who leads the Gap Global Creative Center. Tracy Gardner will continue in her role as Creative Adviser to Gap.

Bay is one of several key appointments that Gap Inc. has been making to fortify its business.

Last week, the company said that Michael Francis, the former J.C. Penney president and chief marketing officer at Target Corp., will become the company's marketing creative adviser starting Monday. He is expected to provide guidance to the company's marketing teams across the company.

Francis will be spending two weeks a month at Gap's San Francisco offices, working closely with CEO and Chairman Glenn Murphy and the company's brand leaders.

In April, the company named Stef Larsson, former head of global sales for H&M, as president of the Old Navy brand. He'll start by the end of October, replacing Tom Wyatt, who resigned in February.

In February 2011, a management shake-up ended with a new president for the Gap brand, and in May 2011 Robinson was fired, as his designs were not catching on shoppers, with some exceptions. Gap also established a Global Creative Center and consolidated its marketing in New York.

Shares of Gap Inc. gained 19 cents to $35.39 in afternoon trading. The stock has traded between $15.64 and $36.60 in the past 52 weeks.

Lady Gaga, Vivienne Westwood top theatrical day at LFW

LONDON - London Fashion Week kicked into high gear Sunday, with a hectic day of shows that culminated in Lady Gaga taking a starring turn on celebrity milliner Philip Treacy's catwalk.

Earlier in the day, punk queen Vivienne Westwood upstaged her own models in a finale that saw her strutting down the runway with a climate change slogan T-shirt.

Fashion doesn't get more theatrical than this.

Day Three of London's twice-a-year style extravaganza was packed with runway previews by some of the capital's most popular designers: Westwood, Paul Smith, Jonathan Saunders, Mary Katrantzou and Alice Temperley.

But Lady Gaga, in a hot pink, floor-length shroud, stole the show when she opened her friend Treacy's Michael Jackson-themed comeback show. Treacy, who has designed fanciful hats for Gaga as well as countless royals and celebrities, has not shown at the fashion week for a decade.

Raising her arms and looking up, the pop icon announced: "Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest milliner in the world: Philip Treacy."

She was joined by fellow celebrities Kim Cattrall, Grace Jones, and Nick Cave in the front row at the show, which featured Jackson's legendary stage costumes paired with Treacy's headgear.

The outfits, which included the original red "Thriller" jacket — were lent from a collection held by the King of Pop's costume designers. They are set to be auctioned in California in December.

The spectacle topped a long day of shows that featured onetime punk priestess Westwood, who championed her favourite cause - climate change - as she closed her runway preview.

The orange-haired designer used two models to unfurl a banner proclaiming a climate revolution, then strutted down the catwalk herself in a "Climate Revolution" T-shirt, shorts and makeup that looked as if she had a giant black eye.

"I loved it," former model Jo Wood said. "There was so much there that I wanted. And I love Vivienne as a person. She's the one show I won't miss."

Some of Westwood's severe outfits looked like they were from just before the "Mad Men" era, when U.S. first lady Mamie Eisenhower helped set conservative fashion trends.

Some outfits looked silly, others - evoking the Jackie Kennedy era that came a few years later - appeared wonderfully retro and chic.

Did the ensembles work? Westwood, ever the iconoclast, claimed she simply didn't care, insisting she was only interested in using fashion as a way to air her views on the environment.

ALICE TEMPERLEY

Westwood wasn't the only person looking to the '50s and '60s for sizzle and spice. Sophia Loren was the inspiration behind Alice Temperley's London catwalk show Sunday, an elegant concoction of '50s full skirts fit for a royal garden party.

Temperley, a favourite of Kate and Pippa Middleton, said she wanted to update the 1950s couture look and make it accessible.

The designer said the conical hats the models wore exemplified the classic couture feel of the spring collection, which was set in a grand chandeliered hall.

"I wanted to create something modern and sleek, something that gives the feeling of the dream of couture," she said of the hats, which were similar to the style worn by Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Working from a soft palette dominated by powder blue and ivory, Temperley showed off flirty, tea-length circle skirts and dresses that accentuated a tiny waist. A theme was skirts with semi-sheer horizontal organza stripes, which Temperley said was to show a bit of leg and make the retro look more fun.

Textures were luxurious and soft with lace, silk, brocade and tulle with flower appliques.

Temperley is best known for her romantic evening and bridal gowns, and is launching a more affordable line at British department store John Lewis.

On Friday, Kate Middleton, now known as the Duchess of Cambridge, wore a Temperley ice blue dress with white lace sleeves to a tea party in Malaysia.

JONATHAN SAUNDERS

Loud clashing colours, full-on sequins, holographic stripes - Jonathan Saunders' catwalk show Sunday had it all. These aren't clothes for the shy woman.

Saunders, who chose to stage his spring collection in the industrial underbelly of the Tate Modern museum, opened with a series of silver and gold separates with a holographic sheen.

Skirts and dresses made of a plastic-like material with large circle discs came next, the discs glimmering like fish scales in the spotlight.

But the star of the show was stripes, stripes and more stripes. There were bright lime trouser suits and dresses in thick horizontal stripes, a black and white dress in a chevron stripe, and dresses with flowing stripes of a clashing colour that cleverly followed the bias cut of the garment.

To end, Saunders upped the '70s disco fever feel with a series of fully sequined dresses in bright stripes of colour: Black with blue and silver, and black with red and green. On another designer it could have looked tacky, but on Saunders, it somehow all worked.

MARIOS SCHWAB

While other designers work summery watercolour hues and bold prints, Marios Schwab's catwalk show Sunday was a darkly seductive affair of shredded leather, smouldering midnight tones and tribal detailing.

Drawing inspiration from an idea of the Amazon warrior, Schwab opened his show with a series of dresses in sheer layers of black and oxblood, decorated with leather tassels.

These tassels appeared throughout the show - adorning high heels or flat lace-up gladiator sandals, on lapels, in short parallel rows down the bodice, or strategically shielding the body on sheer gowns.

Schwab also created texture with pleating, which was used first on leather dresses in fuchsia and inky blue, then later on chiffon skirts paired with lace tops in the same hue.

Schwab's designs always play on seduction and have a mysterious femme fatale element to them, and his spring collection was no exception. Models' bare bodies were just visible under the layers of light material, and at times high slits on the pleated leather skirts revealed flesh-toned mesh layers beneath.

The final evening pieces - nude or sheer black high-collared column gowns embellished with tassels and beading - were dramatic showstoppers.

The Greco-Austrian designer's show was packed, with front row guests including Japanese Vogue's editor Anna Dello Russo.

'Silver Linings Playbook' audience favourite at TIFF 2012

TORONTO - "Silver Linings Playbook" has won a key boost in the race for Oscar glory.

The feel-good romantic dramedy starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro was named audience favourite at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It's a coveted prize often seen as an indicator of awards show success and festival director Piers Handling predicted a celebrated run for the quirky feature, opening Nov. 21.

"It's a deeply emotional story," said Handling, noting it's about two flawed people — played by Cooper and Lawrence — who come together to overcome their obstacles.

"De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence for sure will be up for Oscar nominations, as well as Bradley Cooper. For this film, I think they'll get a number of nominations."

Toronto audiences have proven to be savvy predictors of would-be smashes: past picks "The King's Speech," "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" and "Slumdog Millionaire" all went on to multiple Academy Award nominations and wins.

The best Canadian feature prize went to the gender-bending love story "Laurence Anyways," directed by Xavier Dolan.

The 23-year-old Quebec phenom fought back tears as he accepted the $30,000 award, admitting that he had feared the film would "be forgotten."

Instead, Dolan now follows in some big footsteps — the last two Quebec films that won TIFF's top Canadian feature prize ended up being Canada's submission to the Oscars.

Philippe Falardeau's "Monsieur Lazhar" was last year's pick, while Denis Villeneuve's "Incendies" got the nod in 2010. Both ended up among the final nominees for the best foreign-language film category.

Dolan said he didn't want to dream about such prospects for "Laurence Anyways," a stylish portrait of a transsexual man and his decade-long romance with a woman.

"It would be an audacious choice," said Dolan, whose film opens in Toronto on Friday before heading to other English Canadian cities.

"Usually we have war movies, we have sociologically implicated movies.... I don't want to dream about it. I don't know what Canada's choice will be. I would love for them to pick my movie but that's all I have to say. There are serious contenders out there — 'War Witch' and a lot of films could be chosen for Canada."

The best debut Canadian feature prize went to two films: Brandon Cronenberg's stylized feature "Antiviral," and Jason Buxton's dark drama "Blackbird." Both directors also each won cash prizes of $15,000.

The low-key Cronenberg — son of Canadian film legend David Cronenberg — seemed at a loss for words when he took the stage to offer his thanks.

"I didn't have a speech prepared, which was a huge mistake I realized," Cronenberg said afterwards.

"This is a great boost for the film. We had a really wonderful welcoming reaction from the Toronto audiences and so it's extremely exciting."

Later, he joked that he had already signed his cheque over to producer Niv Fichman.

"This is like, the first instalment of a lot of money," Cronenberg quipped.

The awards were handed out Sunday an annual brunch gala marking the end of the 11-day movie marathon, which included new films from Ben Affleck, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Thomas Anderson and Terrence Malick.

Affleck's political thriller "Argo," opening Oct. 12, was a close second in the people's choice vote, said Handling.

He predicted multiple Oscar nods for Affleck, who both stars and directs the film about a secret CIA mission to extract six U.S. citizens from Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis.

"Ben Affleck hit a home run, I think, with this film — the Toronto audiences gave it standing ovations, they embraced it, they loved it, he's fantastic in the film, he gives a wonderful, wonderful performance, so I think there'll be all kinds of nominations for him," said Handling.

Others he predicted on the way to acting kudos include Julianne Moore in "What Maisie Knew," Elle Fanning in "Ginger and Rosa," Jake Gyllenhaal in "End of Watch" and Joaquin Phoenix in "The Master."

"It's a strong year in terms of actors. It always is and I think it'll be very interesting to see what the Academy, and I guess what the Golden Globes also, nominates."

Other winners Sunday included the Colin Farrell comedy "Seven Psychopaths," named favourite Midnight Madness film, and the Jared Leto rock documentary "Artifact," which won the favourite documentary award.

Winnipeg filmmaker Deco Dawson won $10,000 and the best Canadian short film prize for "Keep a Modest Head," a mind-bending look at surrealist Jean Benoit.

Amanda Bynes cited in Burbank for driving on suspended license

BURBANK, Calif. - Actress Amanda Bynes had another run-in with the law when she was pulled over for driving on a suspended license by a Southern California airport.

Burbank's Bob Hope Airport spokesman Victor Gill says airport police cited the actress, best known for her roles in the TV show "What I Like About You" and the film "Easy A," and impounded her car Sunday.

He said in a statement that "police did cite Amanda Bynes for driving a vehicle with a suspended drivers license this morning."

Bynes' driving privileges had been suspended after she was charged with hit-and-run in connection with two traffic crashes.

Los Angeles prosecutors accused Bynes, 26, of leaving the scene of two accidents, one on April 10 and another on Aug. 4, without providing proper information. The first incident occurred just days after Bynes was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. She has pleaded not guilty in that case.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Keira Knightley seems to be in a good place personally and professionally.

She's engaged to marry musician James Righton and stars in the film adaptation of "Anna Karenina" alongside Jude Law.

The 27-year-old tells Vogue magazine's October issue, there was a time when she wasn't in such a good place.

She recalls a time when the fame from such roles as "Bend it like Beckham" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise was too intense.

She says she "literally had no life outside of acting" and desired to "not be 'on' all the time."

Instead of working, Knightley read books, cooked and lived in France.

The October issue of Vogue goes on sale Sept. 25.

"Anna Karenina" opens in limited release on Nov. 16.
